Structural and roof load monitoring, before it becomes critical

Snow load, heavy rain and wind loads place strain on widely spanned hall roofs. We measure the deflection of the load-bearing structure using lasers and warn automatically before an overload occurs.

Why roof monitoring

When the load on the roof becomes a hazard

Climatic influences create load situations on buildings. Especially on widely spanned roof structures, this creates a real hazard potential for people and assets.

Request a quote

Heavy snow loads

Wet snow across large areas quickly adds up to loads of several tonnes on the load-bearing structure.

Heavy rain & ponding water

If drains are blocked, water collects in hollows and loads the roof additionally and unevenly.

Storm & wind loads

Gusts and suction create changing loads that place particular strain on widely spanned roofs.

Structural fatigue

Recurring load cycles and temperature fluctuations lead to material fatigue over time.

Widely spanned roofs

Logistics, industrial and sports halls have large spans and react sensitively to overload.

Time to act

An early warning gives operators the crucial hours to clear the building or remove snow.

How it works

Laser-based structural monitoring

With laser-based measurement technology, you reliably assess a structure’s load capacity with regard to possible overload. Precise deflection measurements and an efficient early warning system provide confidence and, in an emergency, more time to act.

  1. 01

    Reference measurement

The initial condition of the roof structure is captured as a reference, the basis for every later assessment.

  2. 02

    Deflection measurement

The sensors measure the deformation continuously, the data is collected in a data logger.

  3. 03

    Threshold alerting

When defined limit states are reached, you are automatically alerted, even remotely.

Readout via mobile device

Data from the data logger can be retrieved on the move and monitored remotely.

Retrofittable

The sensors are retrofittable in existing buildings and remotely queryable.

Areas of application

Typical buildings with widely spanned roofs

Wherever large roof areas take on significant loads, continuous structural monitoring provides safety.

  • Logistics & warehouse halls
  • Industrial halls
  • Sports & ice halls
  • Exhibition halls
  • Stadiums
  • Widely spanned roof structures
Typical starting situation

How operators secure their hall roofs

Starting situation

The operator of a widely spanned hall wants to be able to decide, with confidence, during heavy snowfall whether and when the roof needs to be cleared, instead of relying on visual inspection and gut feeling.

Implementation

Laser-based sensors are retrofitted to the load-bearing structure. Deflection is measured continuously, the data is collected in a data logger and can be retrieved remotely.

Benefit

The visualised load states serve as a decision-support tool. When limit states are reached, the system alerts automatically and provides the time needed to act.

The advantages

  • Objective decision support

Whether to clear the roof or keep running is decided on measured deflection, not a glance at the roof.

  • Automatic threshold alerting

The alert comes as soon as the threshold is reached, even at night and on weekends.

  • Retrofittable and remotely queryable

The sensors are added to the existing load-bearing structure, and its condition can be checked remotely.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about roof monitoring

How is the roof load monitored?
Instead of directly weighing the load, the system measures the deformation of the load-bearing structure. Laser-based deflection measurements detect how much the roof deforms under the current load, a reliable indicator of a possible overload.
When am I alerted?
Alerting happens when predefined limit states are reached. We set these thresholds together based on the structure and the relevant load cases, in line with applicable snow load standards such as Eurocode 1 (DIN EN 1991-1-3).
Can the system be retrofitted to an existing building?
Yes. The sensors are retrofittable and remotely queryable. They can be installed on existing roof structures without requiring a new build or major structural intervention.
Which buildings is roof monitoring suitable for?
Monitoring is particularly worthwhile on widely spanned roof structures, for example logistics and industrial halls, sports and ice halls, exhibition halls or stadiums. Bridge structures can also be monitored with the same measurement technology.
How can I view the readings?
The collected data is gathered in a data logger and can be retrieved, for example, via a mobile device. The various load states are visualised and serve as a decision-support tool.
Does Infrasolute also handle the concept and operation?
Yes. From concept through installation to ongoing operation, you get everything from one source. On request, we also take on monitoring, including evaluation and alerting, for you on an ongoing basis.
